Revision of Technology Classssssssss

Topics
·      Bridge
·      Lightroom
·      Non destructive editing
·      Camera raw
·      Digital workflow
·      Metadata
·      Photoshop
·      Colour Theory

Colour theory
·      Colour models/modes
o   RGB, LAB, Adobe RGB
·      Electromagnetic spectrum – the visible spectrum. Short waves = blue, long waves = red waves, green in the middle.
o   RGB additive colour system,  eyes more sensitive to green. Rods and cones on back of the eye to see colour. Three different types of cones, one sensitive to each colour.
·      Metamerism- if pure red and pure green light are shined in our eyes we will see yellow light because both types of cones (red cones and green cones) are both sensing the light and reacting.
·      Used in printing and computers/tv’s
·      Need to know!!!!

·        LAB colour space – lightness, a red-green channel, b- blue-yellow channel
·      Metadata- in the catalogue, file, XMP
o   Cat- lightroom
o   File- jpeg, TIFF, raw
o   Raw- keeps camera info, setting details, date created,
o   Raw file – image info, metadata, jpeg preview
o   Propietory – owned by the company- CR2, NEF
o   Open – can be edited/opened by anyone – jpg, dng, tiff
o   XMP – bridge

·      NDE
o   Adjustment layers, smart objects/filters, layer masks, clone on to new layer
·      Bridge – Broswer- doesn’t retain information – is a window into your file system. Whereas lightroom is the the opposite
·      Lightroom
o   Catalogue
o   Rendering Engine – Allows you to see the changes that you’ve made on the image.
·      Fixed rendering = derivative file, printed version, the colour of each pixel is defined and fixed.
·      NDE – easily undone or changed.
·      NDE – bulk editing easy

Non Destructive editing

 Part III – Catalogue-Based Non-Destructive Imaging***
  1. What model does cataloguing software use ?
The model that is used is a library model.
  1. Where are the images stored in a catalogue based system ?
Anywhere. Images can be imported into lightroom and viewed there.
  1. Where does the catalogue get its initial information about the files ?
Metadata
  1. Where does the cataloguing software store this information ?
The catalogue.
  1. What is the main organising principle of Browser based systems ?
The file system.
  1. How do cataloguing systems organise their images ?
A cataloguing system runs on metadata.
  1. How does a cataloguing system make changes to an image ?
It updates the metadata.
  1. Can other programs see these changes ?                              No
  2. How does a cataloguing system make changes to an image available to other programs ?
Export it.
  1. List 5 advantages of Cataloguing based PIE software ?
    1. It doesn’t change original data of image, totally non-destructive!
    2. Can bring images together from all over the shop. All accessed from a central database
    3. Edits can be applied to several images.
    4. Backing up and restoring becomes easy
    5. Exporting
  2. Give two examples of software that combine Image Cataloguing and Editing functions ?
    1. Lightroom                                                                                                                                          Capture
